Interviews intimidate many professionals in all fields In the IT world, where so much is done by e-mail, phone, and fax, an in-person meeting can be especially difficult But getting past your fear and fine-tuning your interviewing skills can give your career a real boost A crucial first step is to understand that, at an interview, you play a specific role With practice, you can play your role to perfection To give a command performance, it s important to think of the interviewer as an ally, not as the enemy Avoid a smug and overconfident attitude Instead, approach the interview as a chance to help solve a problem The interviewer wants to be able to hire you You can help them make that decision by showing them why you re right for the job and the company Along these same lines, avoid appearing too eager to land the job Overeagerness hurts your credibility and may be a turn-off to the interviewer, who may question your reasons for wanting the position so badly These days, your first interview is likely to be with an internal recruiter Typically, this is not a technical person but, rather, someone who has found your r sum in their database of applicants and has picked out enough key words to feel it might be a good fit for one of their positions As a rule, they work from a set of questions used with all candidates for that position Their job is to make sure you re not a homicidal maniac and to check out whether you know the basics of the job you applied for They re also looking for any discrepancies in your work history that may tip them off to a poor work ethic or unreliable patterns of behavior Taking these interviews seriously is important If you want to advance to the next round, don t come across too picky, odd, or high maintenance Be truthful and build a relationship with this person They are the gatekeepers who will recommend whether you ever get to speak to the hiring manager Once you make it past the recruiter, your next interview may be with the hiring manager Their job is to establish you re a normal, functioning member of society Once that s done, you re more likely to be handed off to a more technical person, probably the person who will be your immediate supervisor when you start work Other members of the technical team may also be present Your interviewer wants to get a sense of who you are, certainly, but they also want to gauge your technical ability Expect to be asked fairly specific questions (we cover these in detail in the section, Common Questions for Different Areas of IT ), which tests your technical knowledge, your ability to think on your feet, and your response to common crisis situations in your particular field Don t be surprised if you re asked many of the same questions the hiring manager previously asked you If you ve been sitting with one person answering questions for some time and she suggests meeting the rest of the team, take it as a good sign, but don t start pouring the champagne just yet Never assume the second, third, or even the seventh interview is just a formality, even if the person who first interviewed you says it is Smile and shake hands with everyone you re introduced to Always be your best, keep track of everyone you meet, and never get irritated at answering the same questions again So, just how do you put your best foot forward Read on.
