There are several ways to create a selection from a path. The easiest way is to hit Enter. Voil ! You can also use the Selection from Path button in the Paths tool options, the Path to Selection button at the bottom of the Paths dialog (it has a pink square on it), the Path to Selection menu item in the context menu you get when right-clicking on a path in the dialog, or the Select From Path item in the image window s menu. Try it! Once you ve defined your path, convert it to a selection. At this point, you ll see both the path and the selection. If you find that distracting, you can hide the path by clicking the visibility eyeball button in the Paths dialog. Or simply switch to any other tool in the Toolbox (paths are only visible when the Paths tool is active, unless you turn on the visibility eye). To see what you ve created, copy the selection and (from the image window menus) open Edit Paste as New. GIMP will create a new image containing only your selection, on a transparent background (Figure 5-10).

But often the boundaries don t work out quite so well, and the selection looks odd when pasted somewhere else. Other times, there is no sharp edge imagine trying to select a photo of a shadow, or a cloud, or a furry dog.

The Linux Target Image Builder (LTIB) user interface is much like the kernel configuration tool, which, although familiar to systems-level engineers, can be confusing if you re new to Linux. LTIB is accommodating in that it does its best to verify the environment before starting a build and lets you know about corrective actions before starting a 3-hour build process. One of the complaints about LTIB is that the first time it runs, it downloads the entire set of packages that it could use in a distribution. This is a mixed blessing in that after the packages are on the system, the host doesn t need to be attached to the network in order to get a build running. Another advantage of the big download is that you can put the entire directory into a code librarian and check it out on a build machine for easy platform scripting. The second complaint is that the software doesn t build toolchains but downloads the binaries and installs them on the system. This is also somewhat advantageous in that building a toolchain requires at least an hour on a very fast computer and, due to the patches and configuration dependencies, is an operation that frequently fails. LTIB provides the sources for the toolchain it downloads; it just doesn t build the toolchain during the build process running on the host machine. One great advantage of LTIB is that it builds a JFFS2 image containing the root file system, ready to be burned on to a flash partition, as part of the build. Along with the self-contained nature of the project, LTIB is a great tool if you want or need to automate your platform build.

You can also have problems if you make a relatively sloppy path. For instance, the path in Figure 5-12 doesn t follow the contours of the dog s fur very well.

Figure 5-12. A sloppy path If you make that path into a selection and paste it somewhere, the sharp edges show up and the result looks artificial (Figure 5-13). You can make a sloppy selection look better by feathering it to make its edges softer. It s not a complete solution but sometimes it s the best bet. Most of the selection tools (such as Rectangle, Ellipse, and Lasso) offer feathering as a tool option. But the Paths tool doesn t, so you ll have to feather the selection after the fact, using Select Feather from the image window. (Some people prefer feathering after selection anyway as it gives you more chance to increase or decrease the feathering as needed.) This brings up the Feather dialog (Figure 5-14), which lets you choose the amount of feathering, specified in pixels.
